Tree to 30 m with ironbark on trunk and larger branches or throughout, dark grey to black and rough.. Juvenile leaves elliptic to ovate, adult lanceolate, 10–15 cm long, 1.4–2.5 cm wide; petiole 1–2 cm long.. Umbels 7-flowered, arranged in panicles; peduncle terete or rarely quadrangular, 4–7 mm long; pedicels 3–6 mm long.. Buds obovoid or obconical; operculum hemispherical-conic, ± 3 mm long, ± 4 mm wide, rounded at apex.. Calyx-tube obconical, 3–4 mm long, ± 4 mm wide.. Fruits hemispherical to subcylindrical [obconic-campanulate], 4–6 mm long, 5–6 mm wide with narrow descending disc and usually 4 flush or exserted valves [sometimes included].. Fig. 6/12.
Mixed forests, sometimes the principal species, growing in a wide variety of sites and soils; at elevations up to 800 metres. Usually found on stony slopes or ridges on poorer soils, in mixed open forest.
