Characteristics

Tree to 8 m. Bark grey to white or grey-brown. Juvenile leaves ovate, green, stellate-hairy. Adult leaves opposite, narrowly lanceolate, often falcate, acuminate or uncinate; lamina 12–25 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, bright green; lateral veins prominent, at 25°–35°; intramarginal vein up to 1 mm from margin; petiole quadrangular, 10–30 mm long. Peduncle broadly flattened, up to 25 mm long; pedicels flattened, 5–10 mm long. Buds broadly turbinate; operculum rugose, depressed-hemispherical, with 4 broad lobes separated by ridges in the form of a cross, c. 10 mm long, c. 20 mm wide, scarlet; hypanthium quadrangular, ribbed, c. 15 mm long and wide, green. Fruits broadly campanulate, 4-toothed, 25–40 mm long, 30–50 mm wide; disc broad, prominently domed; valves 4.
