Shrub or small tree 1.5–9 m tall; branchlets puberulous when young, purplish brown.. Leaves usually drying distinctly discolorous, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, (2.5–)3.4–9 cm long, 1.3–5 cm wide, acute, subacuminate or even ± rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, coriaceous, glabrous; petioles 3–4 mm long.. Flowers in 2–8-flowered fascicles in axils of leaves or fallen leaves; pedicels 1.8–6.5 mm long, glabrous to puberulous with ± curled very short hairs; bracteoles placed immediately beneath the calyx-tube, ± triangular, 0.6 mm long, puberulous but not hidden by long hairs.. Calyx-lobes ovate, 3.5 mm long, 3 mm wide, rounded, glabrous, with conspicuous gland-dots.. Petals white, flushed pinkish mauve, pink, greenish yellow or green, oblong, obovate or ovate, elliptic, 4–7.5 mm long, 2–5.5(–6.5) mm wide.. Stamens 35–40; filaments 2.5–7.5 mm long, longest in male flowers; anthers 0.5–1 mm long.. Style 3–4 mm long, lacking in male flowers.. Fruit at first green, then bright yellow becoming red-brown, ellipsoid, 1–1.2 cm long, 7.5–10 mm wide, minutely glandular, rugose but otherwise glabrous when adult but young fruits are usually ± densely puberulous with short adpressed curled hairs; seeds orange-brown, shining.

A shrub or small tree. It grows up to 5 m tall. The branches hang downwards. The stems can be hairy. The bark is smooth. The leaves are dull green and opposite. They are oval and 2-7 cm long. The tip is drawn out but the end is blunt. The leaf stalk is short. The leaves are thin and when crushed they have a sweet smell. The flowers occur as 3-9 together on thin stalks next to the leaves. There are 4-5 white sweet smelling petals. The fruit is purple black and about 1.5 cm across. As it ripens it turns hard brown like a coffee berry and has a crown of flower parts at the end.
