Characteristics

An erect, sparingly or moderately branching, glabrous shrub, up to 1.2 m high; young branches leafy, older branches nude and rough with leaf-scars; cortex brown. Leaves moderately closely set-imbricated, erecto-patent-spreading, oblanceolate-obovate or oblong and somewhat cuneate, (6-)8-25 mm long, 3-8 mm wide, 3-5-toothed or-lobed above the middle or pinnatilobate from near the base with 2-3 pairs of lobes, tapering with straight sides to the base, flattened, coriaceous-slightly carnose, rugulose-punctate when dry, somewhat glaucous or greyish green, distinctly or indistinctly midveined; leaf-lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1-5 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, obtuse and apiculate; leaf-base half-clasping; leaf-margins usually laxly and minutely glandular esp. towards the base. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, few-many on each branch in a corymb-or raceme-like arrangement, ± erect, (0.5-)1-6 cm long, c. 0.5 mm thick, striate, with 2 (seldom 4) reduced lateral leaves at the base; these linear-subulate, 2-5(-7) mm long, entire or apically 2-3-lobed. Involucre shortly and widely campanulate, 6-12 mm in diam., 4-6 mm high. Involucral bracts 8-13, uniseriate, connate to about 2/3, herbaceous and rather thin, usually indistinctly veined but sometimes distinctly many-nerved; the free lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1.5-3 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, acute or bluntly subacute, puberulous-tipped. Receptacle convex, alveolate. Ray-florets 8-13, yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, narrowly cylindrical. Lamina oblong or elliptic-oblong-oblanceolate, 3-6 mm long, 1.5-4 mm wide, (3-)4(-7)-nerved. Style terete; style branches 0.5-1 mm long, obtuse-truncate. Disc-florets c. 40-80. Corolla 3-4.5 mm long. Tube 0.8-1.5 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 2-3 mm long; lobes ovate-narrowly ovate, c. 1 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide. Anthers 1.5-2 mm long incl. the ovate, obtuse-rounded appendage. Style terete with swollen base on a short stylophore; style branches 0.5-0.8 mm long with truncate-bluntly convex tips. Pappus bristles copious, 2-3 mm long, erect, white, finely barbellate, some shorter (c. 1 mm long) and reflexed over the ovary. Achehes oblong-obovate, sometimes slightly curved, 3-4 mm long, 1-1.7 mm wide, densely villous with white-yellowish brown hairs (mucilaginous when soaked), with 8-10 longitudinal ribs under the indumentum.
