Characteristics

An erect branching shrub, 0.5-2(-3) m high, glabrous except for the sometimes arachnose-woolly upper leaf-axils. Branches leafy towards the tips, becoming nude lower down and knotted with leaf-scars, brown or dark greyish. Leaves erecto-patent-spreading and reflexed before withering, linear, flat, 1.5-9 cm long, 0.8-3 mm wide, tapering to ai acute or acuminate tip, completely entire, green, faintly mid-veined. Peduncles lateral and solitary in the upper leaf-axils, many on each branch in a ± corymb-like arrangement, suberect, 3-6 cm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, usually green, terete or slightly striate, sometimes with 2 small lateral leaves at the peduncle-base; these up to 1.5 mm long, subulate, but often more reduced or wholly lacking. Involucre campanulate, 4-6 mm high, 5-10 mm wide, brown or yellowish brown. Involucral bracts 8-12, uniseriate-biseriate, connate to the middle or less, often only at the base, variously shaped but usually widest at or above the middle, 4-6 mm long, 0.5-3 mm wide, herbaceous to ± coriaceous, with 3-8 light or dark, often indistinct nerves, sometimes gibbous towards the base, acute or subacute, puberulous-tipped; margins glabrous or somewhat ciliate. Receptacle somewhat convex, distinctly alveolate. Ray-florets 5-10, yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina linear-elliptic-oblong, 5-12 mm long, 1.4-4 mm wide, 4-9-nerved. Style terete with ± swollen base; style branches 0.8-1 mm long, obtuse. Disc-florets c. 15-30. Corolla 3.3-5 mm long. Tube 1.3-2 mm long, cylindrical, basally ± inflated. Limb campanulate, 2-3 mm long; lobes narrowly ovate, subequal, 1-1.5 mm long, becoming reflexed. Anthers 1.5-2 mm long inch the ovate obtuse appendage. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.5-1 mm long, truncate or slightly convex. Pappus bristles few-moderately numerous, 0.5-1(-1.5) mm long, white. Achenes oblanceolate-narrowly obovate, sometimes pyriform, slightly flattened or often curved, 3-5 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, densely sericeous with rather long and thin, white-yellowish brown, shining (not mucilaginous) hairs, with 7-10 nerves or slender ribs under the indumentum.
