Characteristics

An erect branching shrub, 0.3-3 m high, glabrous throughout, with sometimes rich surface resin, often forming a rather dense rounded bush. Younger branches closely leafy, becoming nude lower down, marked with leaf-scars; cortex yellowish or greyish brown. Leaves erecto-patent, becoming spreading before withering, narrowly linear, 1.5-6 cm long, c. 1(0.6-1.5) mm wide, entire or 2-3-lobed from or above the middle, somewhat thickened and slightly carnose, faintly midveined, bright green or with a glaucous bloom, acute or subacute; leaf-lobes 0.5-3 cm long. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, numerous on each branch in a corymb-like arrangement, 1-6 cm long, c. 0.5 mm wide (0.3-0.7 mm), terete or striate. Peduncle-base furnished with 2 lateral reduced leaves; these subulate, 1-2 mm long. Involucre ± hemispherical, 4-10 mm wide, 2-5 mm high. Involucral bracts 6-10, most often 8, uniseriate, connate to the middle or slightly more, ovate-narrowly ovate, 2.5-5 mm long, 1-3 mm wide, acute-obtuse, herbaceous, with 3-5(-9) thick and distinct, yellow-orange-coloured-brown-black, resmiferous veins, with entire margins and minutely puberulous tips. Receptacle much convex, often hemispherical, distinctly alveolate with fringed or denticulate pit-margins. Ray-florets about equalling the involucral bracts in number, often 8, yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina oblanceolate-narrowly oblong, 3-8 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, 4(-5)-nerved, 3-toothed at the apex. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.6-1 mm long, truncate. Disc-florets c. 25-50. Corolla 3-3.5 mm long. Tube 1-1.5 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, c. 2 mm long; lobes narrowly triangular, 0.7-1 mm long. Anthers 1-1.3 mm long incl. the ovate obtuse appendage. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.4-0.7 mm long, truncate. Pappus bristles numerous, 1.5-2 mm long, white. Achenes oblanceolate-obovate-clavate, sometimes curved, 1.5-3 mm long, c. 1 mm wide, densely villous with short and appressed white hairs which swell and become mucilaginous when wet, with 5-8, ± distinct, low and slender, yellowish-brown ribs or veins.
