Characteristics

A perennial, ± acaulescent herb with a short and thick, lignified, little-branched, subterranean caudex, basally with numerous fibrous roots; branches short and thick, leafy at the aerial tips, copiously lanate, with dirty white or brownish wool interspersed with setiform leaf remains. Leaves numerous from the crown, erect, narrowly linear-subfiliform and canaliculate with ± involute margins, 4-12 cm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, entire or occasionally 2-3-lobed, glabrous or rarely laxly setulose along the basal margins, truncate-obtuse; leaf-base dilated, pale and rather thin, surrounded by copious, dull greyish white-brownish wool. Peduncles terminal, solitary or few from the same crown, erect, 10-30 cm long, 0.7-1 mm thick, glabrous, faintly striate. Involucre hemispherical, 7-14 mm in diam., glabrous. Involucral bracts 9-13, uniseriate, connate to about the middle, faintly 3-many-veined; the free lobes deltoid or ovate-lanceolate, 2-4 mm long, acute-short-acuminate, with puberulous-ciliate tips. Receptacle distinctly convex, shallowly alveolate. Ray-florets 8-13, yellow. Tube 1-1.5 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina oblong, 3-5 mm long, 1.2-2 mm wide, 4-7-veined. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.4-0.7 mm long, broad and flattened, obtuse-truncate. Disc-florets c. 60-120. Corolla 2.5-3.5 mm long. Tube 0.8-1.2 mm long, cylindrical or somewhat widening below. Limb campanulate, 1.8-2.3 mm long; lobes ovate, 0.6-1 mm long. Anthers 1.2-1.5 mm long incl. the ovate obtuse appendage. Style terete or flattened with distinctly swollen base; style branches 0.3-0.5 mm long, with truncate or slightly convex tips. Pappus bristles several, 1-1.5(-2) mm long, flexuous, white, shortly and usually laxly barbellate. Achenes (narrowly) obovate, 3.5-4 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, somewhat compressed, densely puberulous with short, white, papilliform hairs, with 8-10 distinct ribs.
