Characteristics

Shrub 1-2.5 m tall, erect, glabrous, lax, sparingly branching in the upper parts, closely leafy at the branch ends, lower down nude and marked with scale-like leaf-scars; cortex brown. Leaves imbricated, suberect-erecto-patent, becoming spreading before withering, elliptic-ovate, 1.5-4 cm long, 6-15 mm wide, flat, coriaceous, glaucous or greyish green, obtuse(-subacute), distinctly many-veined; leaf-margins densely and regularly serrate with forwardly directed acute teeth; leaf-base half-clasping. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, several or sometimes many on the same branch in a corymbose arrangement, 2-4 cm long, 0.6-0.9 mm thick, faintly striate, with 2 lateral, reduced, subulate, 2-4 mm long leaves in the axil. Involucre very shortly and widely campanulate, 6-10(-12) mm in diam., c. 2-4 mm high. Involucral bracts 13-15, uniseriate, 4-7 mm long, connate to 2/3-3/4, rather thin, faintly striate; the free lobes deltoid-narrowly triangular, 1.5-2.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, acute, puberulous-tipped. Receptacle somewhat convex-almost flat, alveolate. Ray-florets 11-15, yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, somewhat conical with an inflated base. Lamina elliptic-oblong-narrowly oblong, 5-11 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, 4-veined. Style terete with swollen base on a short stylophore; style branches 0.5-0.8 mm long. (Staminodes occasionally present.) Disc-florets c. 50-90. Corolla 2.5-3.5 mm long. Tube 1-2 mm long, somewhat conical. Limb campanulate, 1.7-2.3 mm long; lobes ovate, 0.7-1 mm long. Anthers 1.2-1.5 mm long incl. the broadly ovate-deltoid, obtuse appendage. Style terete with swollen base; stylophore distinct, c. 0.3 mm long; style branches 0.3-0.6 mm long with truncate-slightly convex tips. Pappus bristles numerous, 1.5-2.5 mm long, densely barbellate, white, erect, some reflexed over the ovary. Achenes narrowly oblong-oblanceolate-oblong-obovate, 3-4 mm long, 0.8-1.5 mm wide, terete or slightly 3-angled, often somewhat curved, glabrous, dark brown-honey-coloured, with 13-20 close-lying ribs, with a short, white, bluntly conical, c. 0.1 mm long, apical appendage (=stylophore).
