Characteristics

A small and slender shrublet, little-branched, c. 1-3 dm high, erect or ascending, glabrous except for woolly tufts in the upper leaf-axils, leafy in the upper parts, becoming nude below. Leaves erect-erecto-patent, narrowly linear-filiform, 1-4 cm long, c. 1 mm wide, subterete or somewhat flattened, entire or 2-3-forked from or above the middle, obtuse-subacute, often with a minute firm apiculus. Peduncles lateral in the uppermost leaf-axils, few or several together on the same branch, erect, 5-19 cm long, slender, c. 0.5 mm thick, terete, smooth or finely striate. Involucre hemispherical, 5-8 mm wide. Involucral bracts 8-13, ovate-lanceolate, uniseriate or nearly so, 3-5 mm long, connate to 1/3-1/2, ± distinctly 3-5-nerved, acuminate-subacute, with glabrous or slightly fringed margins and puberulous tips. Receptacle convex, ± hemispherical, alveolate. Ray-florets 9-15, yellow. Tube short, 0.4-0.8 mm long, ± cylindrical. Lamina narrowly oblong-lorate or narrowly oblanceolate, 5-7 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, 4(-7)-nerved, yellow or sometimes with a red tinge. Style terete or flattened; style branches 0.3-0.5 mm long, truncate. Disc-florets c. 20-50. Corolla 2-2.6 mm long. Tube 0.8-1.1 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 1.2-1.5 mm long; lobes ovate-narrowly ovate, c. 0.5 mm long, with gibbous subcucullate tips. Anthers 0.8-1 mm long incl. the ovate, obtuse-subacute appendage. Style sterile, terete or somewhat flattened, apically subclavate, truncate or slightly convex, simple or shallowly lobed (branches up to 0.3 mm long, not divergent); stylophore short. Pappus bristles several, 1-2 mm long, white, ± erect. Achenes oblong-obovate, 2-3 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, with c. 6 often indistinct ribs or ridges, either glabrous and ± tuberculate or densely villous with short white hairs.
