Characteristics

A much-branched erect shrublet, c. 1-3(-6) dm high, glabrous except for a sparse tomentum at the peduncle-bases; branches flexuous, ascending, often short, laxly leafy, older branches nude with grey cortex. Leaves rather laxly scattered along the branchlets or some fascicled a few together on brachyblasts, suberect and appressed, at length becoming more spreading, entire, 1-6 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, lorate-broadly oblong or (smaller leaves) ovate-rounded, subterete or somewhat flattened, fleshy, rugose when dry, without distinct veins, obtuse, usually minutely apiculate. Peduncles solitary from leaf-axils, with two lateral leaves and a small tuft of arachnose wool at the base, ± erect, often somewhat flexuous, 1.5-8 cm long, 0.5-1 mm thick, terete, usually few on each branch. Involucre widely campanulate with a somewhat cuneate base, sometimes more hemispherical, 5-10 mm wide, 4-7 mm high. Involucral bracts c. 8, connate to 1/3-1/2; the free parts ovate-oblong-narrowly ovate, 2.5-4 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, faintly (3-)5-9-veined, often purplish towards the apex, obtuse-subacute with ciliate tips. Receptacle somewhat convex, alveolate. Ray-florets 6-8, yellow. Tube 1-1.5 mm long, cylindrical or somewhat inflated basally. Lamina (narrowly) obovate-elliptic-oblong, 4.5-8 mm long, 2.5-4 mm wide, 4-veined. Style terete with swollen base; style branches c. 0.8-1.2 mm long. Disc-florets c. 15-25. Corolla 3.5-4 mm long. Tube 1.5-1.8 mm long, cylindrical. Limb distinctly campanulate, 2-2.2 mm long, lobed to the middle or more; lobes narrowly ovate, 1-1.5 mm long. Anthers 1.5-1.7 mm long incl. the ovate subacute appendage. Style terete with swollen base; stylophore distinct, up to c. 0.2 mm long; style branches 0.6-0.8 mm long, truncate. Pappus bristles numerous, 1-1.5 mm long, erect, white. Achenes of the rays + obovate, copiously white-lanate, with indumentum 4-5 mm long and 3-4 mm wide, without indumentum obovate-elliptic-obovate, compressed, brown, 3-4 mm long and 2-2.5 mm wide, with 5 indistinct veins; hairs 1-2 mm long, somewhat mucilaginous when soaked. Achenes of the disc usually not maturing, narrowly oblong, c. 1.5 mm long, shortly pubescent.
