Characteristics

A low vigorous shrub, little or moderately branching, often laxly pulvinate, up to 4 dm high; stems and branches erect-ascending, usually short and stout, appressedly white-grey-tomentose when young, glabrate with age, apically closely leafy, lower down clothed with withered leaf remains. Leaves closely set, erecto-patent or suberect from a somewhat spreading base, linear, 2-9 cm long, with 1-3(-4) mm wide rachis, subterete or flattened, thickish and coriaceous, rigid, appressedly and densely greyish-white tomentose when young, at length covered by a thin silvery felt, eventually glabrescent or glabrate, indistinctly mid-veined, pinnatipartite in the distal half or sometimes from below the middle, often some (rarely most) leaves entire; leaf-lobes alternate-subopposite, 1-3(-4) on each side, erecto-patent-spreading, 2-12 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, rigid, acuminate with firm and ± pungent tips. Peduncles terminal, solitary, erect, stout, (2-)8-20 cm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, striate-sulcate, sparsely-moderately densely floccose-lanate, glabrate with age. Involucre widely campanulate-almost hemispherical, 1-2 cm in diam., 0.5-1 cm high, greyish or whitish floccose-lanate or tomentose, glabrescent. Involucral bracts (9-)13-20, uniseriate, connate to c. 1/3, lanceolate, 8-10 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, midveined, acuminate. Receptacle somewhat convex, shallowly alveolate. Ray-florets (9-)13-20, rich yellow. Tube 0.7-1 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina oblanceolate-oblong-obovate, 10-25 mm long, 3-7 mm wide, 7-veined. Style terete with slightly swollen base; style branches 0.7-1 mm long, obtuse-truncate. Disc-florets c. 50-100. Corolla 4-4.7 mm long, tubular below, gradually widening above; lobes deltoid-triangular-ovate, 0.6-0.8 mm long. Anthers 1.8-2 mm long inch the ovate-oblong obtuse appendage. Style terete with swollen base on a short stylophore; style branches 0.6-0.8 mm long, with somewhat convex tips. Pappus copious, 1-3 mm long, flexuous, white, barbellate, at length aggregated in caducous tufts, some shorter (0.5-1 mm long) and reflexed over the ovary. Achenes elliptic-oblong-oblong-obovate, 4-6 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, 5-6(-8)-ribbed, densely hirsute with short white or brownish hairs, mucilaginous when soaked.
