Characteristics

Much-branched, erect, glabrous shrublet; branches erect-ascending, often short or reduced to brachyblasts, leafy in the upper parts, becoming nude; cortex of young branchlets tawny-ochre-coloured, soon becoming grey-blackish. Leaves rather laxly set at the branch ends and crowded on brachyblasts, erecto-patent, 0.5-1.3 cm long, ± spathulate in outline, coriaceous; basal portion entire, oblong-narrowly oblong, flattened, faintly midribbed on the abaxial side, somewhat canaliculate on the adaxial side, 1-2 mm wide; distal portion (from or above the middle) dilated to a ± fan-shaped lamina up to 1 cm wide, apically shallowly and more deeply cut into (7-)10-20 lobes, each tipped by a distinct, white, firm, clypeate-umbonate (obtuse-rounded and apiculate) point; leaf-base half-clasping, sparsely and indistinctly arachnose in the axil, glabrescent. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, few on each branchlet, erect, 3-6 cm long, 0.6-0.9 mm thick, terete, ± striate, straw-coloured-reddish brown or greyish glaucous. Involucre hemispherical, c. 1 cm in diam. Involucral bracts 9-11, biseriate (much overlapping), free almost from the base, 5-7 mm long, distinctly 3-many-veined, with blunt ciliate tips; outer oblong, 2-3 mm wide, obtuse-somewhat acuminate; inner ovate, 3-4 mm wide, with submembranous margins. Receptacle slightly convex, shallowly alveolate. Ray-florets 7-11, yellow. Tube 1-1.5 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina elliptic-oblong-narrowly oblong, 5-7 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, 4-veined. Style terete; style branches 1-1.5 mm long, acute, or obtuse and short-acuminate. Disc-florets c. 25-35. Corolla 3-3.5 mm long. Tube c. 1.5 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 1.5-2 mm long; lobes deltoid-narrowly ovate, 0.8-1 mm long. Anthers 1.5-1.8 mm long incl. the ovate obtuse appendage. Pollen grains 22.0-24.4 µ in diameter. Style terete or somewhat flattened with swollen base on a distinct stylophore; style branches 0.3-0.6 mm long, truncate. Ovaries not maturing, narrowly oblong, 1-1.5 mm long, glabrous or puberulous. Pappus bristles numerous, 1-1.5 mm long, white, erect. Achenes (of the rays, not quite mature) oblong, c. 3 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, shortly villous with brown hairs, somewhat mucilaginous when soaked.
