Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Euryops

Characteristics

An erect or ascending shrublet, usually less than 0.5 m high, seldom up to 1.2 m, normally little-branched, glabrous except for dense woolly tufts in the upper leaf-axils, closely leafy in the upper parts, lower down nude. Leaves erecto-patent-spreading, 2-5 cm long, pinnatipartite or tripartite with narrowly linear-subfiliform but usually flattened rachis and segments. Leaf segments 3-6, simple or sometimes forking, 1-3 cm long or less, 1-1.5 mm wide, alternate-subopposite, subacute-acute, sometimes mucronate, narrowly impressed-veined on the adaxial side, faintly midribbed beneath. Peduncles axillary in the upper leaf-axils, erect, few-many on the same branch, 4-12 cm long, 0.5-1 mm thick, ± striate. Involucre hemispherical, 8-12 mm wide (in dwarf specimens sometimes only 6-8 mm wide). Involucral bracts 10-15, subuniseriate-subbiseriate, partly overlapping, connate to c. 1/3-1/2, ovate-lanceolate, 5-6 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, ± distinctly three-nerved, subacute-acute or acuminate, puberulous-tipped. Receptacle hemispherical or conical, alveolate. Ray-florets 11-19, bright yellow. Tube short, c. 0.5(-1) mm long, cylindrical or somewhat flattened. Lamina narrowly oblong-elliptic-oblong, 6-13 mm long, 1.8-4 mm wide, 4(-7)-nerved. Style flattened; style branches 0.3-0.5 mm long, with truncate-rounded tips. Disc-florets c. 50-80. Corolla 2.2-3 mm long. Tube 0.5-0.9 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 1.7-2.2 mm long; lobes (narrowly) ovate, 0.6-0.9 mm long, with slightly gibbous tips. Anthers 1-1.2 mm long incl. the ovate-oblong, subacute-obtuse appendage. Style sterile, terete or flattened with slightly swollen base on a short stylophore; style branches up to 0.4 mm long, with truncate or slightly convex tips, or style simple. Pappus bristles several-numerous, 1-2 mm long, white, ± erect, distinctly barbellate. Achenes (of the ray-florets) narrowly obovate, 3.5-4.5 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, with 6-9 longitudinal ridges, brown or black, glabrous with a verruculose-tuberculate surface, or villous with short white hairs. Achenes glabrous, dark brown-black, with a coarsely tuberculate and minutely verruculose surface.
