Characteristics

A stout erect shrub, 0.5-1.8(-3) m high, glabrous in all parts, with little or no surface deposit of resin. Leaves erecto-patent, rather close-set on the upper branches, 5-10 cm long, 5-10 mm wide, flattened, serratilobed-closely and shortly pinnatilobate, coriaceous; leaf-lobes 8-18 on each side, forwardly directed, 1-6 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, acute. Peduncles terminal, solitary, erect, very stout, 4-15 cm long, 2-4 mm thick, terete, striate. Involucre broadly cupshaped, flat-based, 15-30 mm wide at the base, widening above to 30-45 mm wide, 12-20 mm high, coriaceous, striate, yellowish green or brown to light or reddish brown. Involucral bracts c. 21, uniseriate, connate for their greater part; the free lobes narrowly triangular, 5-7 mm long, acuminate, with puberulous margins and tips. Receptacle flat, alveolate. Ray-florets 20-35, yellow. Tube cylindrical, rather thick, 2-3 mm long. Lamina narrowly lorate-oblanceolate, 22-32 mm long, 4-6 mm wide, many (c. 15)-nerved. Style terete or somewhat flattened, with swollen base; style branches 0.8-1.2 mm long, apically with a sterile truncate appendage. Disc-florets very numerous (usually > 250). Corolla 5-6 mm long, tubular, gradually widening above; lobes deltoid-ovate, 0.6-0.8 mm long. Anthers 2-2.5 mm long incl. the ovate appendage. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 1-1.2 mm long, truncate, with very short sweeping-hairs. Pappus bristles numerous, 1.5-2.5 mm long, white, outer reflexed over the ovary. Achenes narrowly elliptic-oblong-oblong-oblanceolate, 4-5 mm long, c. 1.5 mm wide, flattened, glabrous, dark brown, with 8-10 ± distinct ribs.
