Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Euryops

Characteristics

An erect much-branched shrub, often rather dense and rounded, 0.3-1.5 m high, glabrous but for ± distrhct arachnose tufts in the leaf-axils; young branches closely leafy, becoming nude with age and rough with leaf-scars; cortex grey-brown. Leaves erecto-patent-spreading, filiform and subterete and slightly canaliculate or linear-oblanceolate and flat-flattened, (1-)2-10 cm long, 0.5-5 mm wide, coriaceous or subcarnose, widest above the middle and tapering to a narrow base or of uniform narrowness, mid-veined (sometimes indistinctly), obtuse-acute, apiculate. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, usually many on each branch, 1-7 cm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, striate, apically thickened(-3 mm wide), with a hollow cylinder filled with a loose spongy tissue; axils without lateral leaves but with arachnose tufts of hair. Involucre widely campanulate, 5-10 mm wide, 3-7 mm high, completely connate when young to an oblong-napiform or ovoid, ± truncate or apiculate closed cup, splitting up at anthesis into 2-4 segments; these ovate-broadly rotund-ovate, 3-7 mm long, 3-8 mm wide, connate to about the middle or more, herbaceous and rather thin, green-brown, distinctly or faintly many-nerved, obtuse, puberulous-tipped. Receptacle flat or somewhat convex, alveolate. Ray-florets 5-10(-12), yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina narrowly elliptic-oblong-narrowly oblong, 4-15 mm long, 1.5-4 mm wide, 4(-10)-nerved. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.5-1 mm long, obtuse. Disc-florets c. 15-60. Corolla 4-5 mm long. Tube 1.3-2 mm long, cylindrical. Limb narrowly campanulate, 2.5-3.5 mm long; lobes lanceolate, 0.8-1.5 mm long. Anthers 1.8-2.2 mm long incl. the ovate-narrowly ovate, subacute appendage. Style terete with swollen base; stylophore short and indistinct, disc-like; style branches 0.5-1 mm long, truncate. Pappus bristles numerous, 1-2 mm long, white, erect, some reflexed over the ovary. Achenes narrowly obovate or pyriform, somewhat compressed, 3.5-5.5 mm long, 2-2.5 mm wide, densely lanate with white-yellowish brown, erecto-patent, rather thin hairs (not mucilaginous when soaked), with 5-8 low ribs under the indumentum.
