Characteristics

Shrub tall and vigorous, up to 2.5 m high, glabrous, strongly resiniferous; defoliated branches marked with leaf-scars and sulcate from the decurrent leaf-bases. Leaves erecto-patent-spreading or recurved and ± flexuous, pin-natipartite or seldom entire, (4-)6-20 cm long, coriaceous or somewhat cartilaginous; leaf segments up to 7 on each side, alternate-subopposite, filiform-linear, somewhat flattened, green or slightly glaucous, 3-15 cm long or seldom shorter, 0.5-1.5(-2) mm wide, subacute. Peduncles terminal, solitary (or seldom 2 together), erect, stout, 8-40 cm long (rarely shorter), 1-4 mm wide, ± striate. Involucre urceolate, flat-based with + erect sides or rounded, usually contracted at the orifice, smooth or striate, dark-light brown or straw-coloured, 1-2.5 cm in diam., 0.8-1.5 cm high. Involucral bracts (13-)16-25, uniseriate, connate high up; the free lobes narrowly triangular, 2-4 mm long, puberulous-tipped. Receptacle flat, distinctly alveolate with sometimes raised pit-margins. Ray-florets 16-35, pure yellow. Tube narrowly cylindrical, 3-6 mm long, somewhat inflated basally. Lamina 17-45 mm long, 4-8 mm wide, (4-)7-13-veined. Style terete with swollen base; style branches truncate with rudimentary sweeping-hairs at the apex or glabrous. Disc-florets very numerous (c. 100-400 or rarely less). Corolla tubular, gradually widening above, 6-8 mm long. Anthers 2-3 mm long incl. the ovate appendage. Style terete with swollen base; style branches c. 1.5 mm long with somewhat convex tips. Pappus bristles copious, 4-7 mm long, white or somewhat brownish, the outer shorter, 2-3 mm long, and reflexed over the ovary. Achenes oblong-narrowly elliptic-oblong and somewhat fusiform, 6-7 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, three-angled or flattened or somewhat curved, glabrous, brown, 5-6-ribbed; achenes of the disc often smaller, 4-6 mm long, 1-2 mm wide.
