Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Euryops

Characteristics

Rather compact shrub, c. 0.5-1 m high, densely ramified with many short branches, glabrous except for the upper leaf-axils; branches ± flexuous, ascending, often short, leafy towards the tips, lower down nude and knotted with leaf-scars, usually blackish. Leaves laxly-rather closely set, sometimes crowded on short-branches, erecto-patent, sometimes at length spreading, 4-15 mm long, some (seldom many) linear and entire, some (2-)3-lobed apically or from about the middle with 1-2 mm wide segments and rachis, thickish but somewhat flattened, coriaceous and subcarnose, somewhat rugulose when dry, with a minutely muricate surface, (indistinctly) narrowly midveined adaxially; leaf-lobes suberect-erecto-patent, 1-6 mm long, obtuse and apiculate with a firm point; young leaf-axils laxly arachnose-woolly, glabrescent; leaf-base slightly dilated. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, solitary or few on each branch, erect-ascending, 0.5-4 cm long (sometimes shorter when young), 0.7-1.2 mm thick, striate or somewhat sulcate, with a small tuft of wool at the base and with two lateral leaves in the axil. Involucre hemispherical, 8-12 mm wide. Involucral bracts 6-9, uniseriate or nearly so, connate at the base only, ovate-oblong-narrowly oblong or lanceolate, 5-7 mm long, 1.5-4 mm wide, flat, ± distinctly 3-5(-many)-veined, some with submembranous margins, obtuse(-subacute) with ciliate tips. Receptacle flat or slightly convex, alveolate. Ray-florets 5-11, yellow. Tube 1-2 mm long, cylindrical or somewhat inflated basally. Lamina elliptic-elliptic-oblong, 4.5-8 mm long, 2.5-3.5 mm wide, 4(-7)-nerved. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.8-1.5 mm long, obtuse. Disc-florets c. 20-30. Corolla 4-5 mm long. Tube 1.5-2.2 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 2.5-3 mm long; lobes narrowly ovate-lanceolate, 1.2-2 mm long, subcucullate. Anthers 1.8-2 mm long inch the ovate, obtuse-subacute appendage. Style terete with swollen base on a distinct stylophore; style branches 0.4-0.9 mm long, with truncate or somewhat convex tips. Pappus bristles numerous, 2-3 mm long, white, erect. Achenes copiously villous, incl. the indumentum ± obovate-oblong, c. 5-7 mm long and 3-4 mm wide, without indumentum narrowly obovate, 3.5-5 mm long and 1.3-2 mm wide, with 5-6 nerves or faint ribs; hairs up to 2-3 mm long, thin, straight or slightly flexuous, white or light brown, not mucilaginous when soaked.
