Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Euryops

Characteristics

A much-branched, often compact shrub, 0.5-3.5 m tall, glabrous (except for peduncle-bearing leaf-axils), with erect-erecto-patent or ascending, mostly straight branches, closely leafy in the upper parts, becoming nude lower down and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves imbricated to moderately close-set, erecto-patent or sometimes spreading-reflexed, obovate-oblanceolate in outline, 5-12 mm long, 2-5(-7) mm wide, cuneate and digitately 3-7-lobed (fan-shaped), flattened, coriaceous, distinctly digitate-veined; leaf-lobes narrowly ovate-lanceolate-linear or subulate, 1-4 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, flattened-somewhat trigonous, abaxially convex or ± keeled with a prominent midrib, acute and apiculate; leaf-margins usually sparsely ciliolate-glandular, esp. towards the base. Peduncles lateral in the upper leaf-axils, usually many on each branch in a corymb-or raceme-like arrangement, (2-)5-30 mm long, 0.2-0.5 mm thick, terete, smooth or faintly striate, with a loose tuft of woolly hairs at the base, without lateral leaves in the axil. Involucre hemispherical-widely campanulate, 3-6 mm in diam., 2-4 mm high. Involucral bracts 7-11, uniseriate, connate to the middle, 2-4(-5) mm long, ± distinctly 1-3-veined; the free lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1-2 mm long, c. 1 mm wide, acute, minutely puberulous-tipped. Receptacle distinctly convex, often conical, alveolate. Ray-florets 5-8(-11), yellow. Tube 0.5-1 mm long, cylindrical. Lamina oblong-narrowly obovate-oblong-oblanceolate, 3-6 mm long, 1.2-2 mm wide, (3-)4-veined. Style terete with swollen base; style branches 0.5-0.9 mm long, truncate. Disc-florets c. 15-30. Corolla 2-3 mm long. Tube 0.8-1.2 mm long, cylindrical. Limb campanulate, 1.2-1.8 mm long; lobes deltoid-narrowly ovate, 0.5-0.8 mm long. Anthers c. 1 mm long incl. the deltoid-broadly ovate, obtuse appendage. Style terete, sterile, with somewhat convex tip; stylophore distinct, c. 0.15 mm long; style branches not spreading, short, up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, without stigmatic surfaces. Pappus bristles several-numerous, c. 1.5(1-2) mm long, white, erect, shortly barbellate. Achenes oblong, 1.8-2.5 mm long, 1-1.2 mm wide, terete or slightly bluntly three-angled, smooth, shining yellow or light brown.
