Characteristics

Perennial tree or shrub, 0.2-2.5 m high, typically with milky latex; monoecious, glabrous; branches slender, angular; bark fibrous; buds perulate (covered with scales) with sepals of male flowers open, exposing anthers. Leaves opposite or alternate, chartaceous, lamina oblong or oblong-lanceolate, base abruptly or gradually cuneate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, margins serrate; petioles eglandular. Inflorescences terminal spikes, slender, with many male flowers above and 2 or 3 basal female flowers. Bracts eglandular or with a pair of disc-to cup-shaped, sometimes stipitate glands; male bracts many, orbicular-ovate, toothed and basally glandular; female bracts 0-3, basal. Flowers pedicels short in both sexes. Male flowers calyx 3-lobed; lobes small, lanceolate; petals absent; stamens 3. Female flowers calyx 3-lobed; lobes wide-triangular, acute, eglandular; petals absent; ovary glabrous; styles 3, free. Flowering time (Aug.-)Nov.(-Mar.). Fruit a globose, 3-lobed capsule, breaking up into 2-or 3-valved cocci; valves thinly crustaceous. Seeds globose.
