Flowers pedicellate, calyx 4-5-lobate, the lobes often narrow; corolla usually elongate, the lobes (4-)5, usually elongate and narrow with 2 exterior in bud; stamens 5, usually exserted, the filaments linear, connate at the very base and appearing free of the tube; ovarian disc annular, the style slender, usually exserted, the capitate stigma entire or 2-lobed, the ovules numerous, the placentas peltately adnate to the septum. Fruits capsular, 2-celled and 2-valvate, septicidally dehiscent with each valve entire or bivalvate; seeds usually numerous, imbricate, the body ob-long, compressed, the testa membranous, produced into a wing.
