Characteristics

Dioecious, small, prostrate; stems slender, subpinnate, 1-2 inches long, the upright stems densely tufted, 3-4 mm long, closely leaved; the leaves 1 mm long, lanceolate with acuminate point or hair-point, entire; nerve wide and faint, extending half-way; cells vermicular, 70 µ long, except toward the leaf-base where they pass through rhomboid to the quadrate alar cells 10 µ wide, which also are chlorophyllose when young. Per. leaves few, erect, sheathing, pointed, almost entire, shorter than the stem-leaves. Seta 3 mm long, red; capsule erect, oval, without neck; teeth short, in eight wide bundles. “Lid and peristome not seen; male flowers numerous, turgid, gemmaceous“.
