Characteristics

Leaves in whorls of 3, congested, the internodes mostly very short; blades 2–6.5 × 0.5–1.4 cm (leaves in lowest whorl very small), oblanceolate or narrowly oblong to ± elliptic, subacute to acute at the apex or less often quite rounded, cuneate at the base, glabrous or sparsely to densely covered with appressed bristly yellow hairs, the costa sometimes very pale; petiole obsolete or 1–3 mm long; stipules about 1–1.5 mm long, ± triangular, keeled, ± obtuse or the appendage scarcely developed.

Corolla 5-tailed in bud; dark green, glabrous to densely appressed bristly-pubescent save at base of tube; tube 6–7 mm long, hairy at the throat and with a ring of deflexed bristly hairs inside; lobes greenish-white inside 8 × 1.5 mm including the 2–3 mm long subulate appendage.
Dwarf subshrub or suffrutex from a creeping woody rhizome; stems several short 5–15 cm* tall, erect thinly woody and glabrous to sparsely or densely appressed setulose with white or yellowish** hairs.
Flowers solitary or in 2-flowered cymes; common peduncle suppressed, pedicels or peduncles of solitary flowers 1–6 mm long; bracts 2 mm long, lanceolate.
Calyx glabrous to densely covered with yellowish appressed bristly hairs; tube campanulate 1.5 mm long; lobes 2–3.5 mm long, lanceolate.
Fruit subglobose, c. 12 mm in diameter, mostly with 3 pyrenes and 3-lobed when dry, crowned by calyx limb.
The pollen presenter 1.2 mm long, cylindrical, 5-lobed at apex.
Style 7–9 mm long.
