Very variable herb or subshrub (10–)22–45(–120) cm. tall, with several branched or unbranched usually erect stems from a thick or fairly slender usually horizontal woody stock; stems 3–4-angled, grooved, glabrous to densely shortly pubescent.. Leaves in whorls of 3–4 or opposite above; blades broadly to narrowly elliptic or ovate to ± obovate, (1.7–)3–8.5 cm. long, (0.6–)1.2–4.8(–5.7) cm. wide, acute to obtuse at the apex or very shortly acuminate, cuneate, not markedly discolorous, but usually paler beneath and often drying with a reticulate darker pattern, glabrous to shortly densely pubescent; lowermost leaves often very reduced, 1 × 0.6 cm.; petioles obsolete or very short; stipules ± 2.5–3.5(–4.5) mm. long, the subulate cusp (1.5–)2–3 mm. long from a broad base..
