Characteristics

Subshrubby herb 60–90 cm. tall, with slender pale reddish brown to dark, densely pubescent unbranched or branched stems, probably from a thick woody stock.. Leaves in whorls of 2–4; blades broadly to narrowly elliptic, 4–8.2 cm. long, 1.4–3.2 cm. wide, acute or slightly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous or slightly ciliate, or densely pubescent on both surfaces, the venation often drying reticulate beneath; petioles 1–2 mm. long; stipules vaginate below, ± 1 mm. long, densely pilose within, caudate, the appendage 2–4 mm. long.. Inflorescences 2–3-flowered; peduncles 1–3 cm. long, spreading pubescent; pedicels 1–2 cm. long, similarly pubescent.. Buds clavate, distinctly acuminate-apiculate.. Calyx-tube 1.5–2.5 mm. long, the limb 0.5 mm. long, truncate or with vestiges of narrow teeth.. Corolla-tube green, cylindrical-funnel-shaped, very slightly curved, 0.9–1.4 cm. long, glabrous outside; lobes deep green, lanceolate-triangular, 5.5 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, venose in dry state.. Ovary 5-locular; style 1.3–1.4 cm. long; stigmatic club coroniform, 2.3 mm. long.. Immature fruits subglobose, ± 9 mm. diameter, with 3 pyrenes.
