Characteristics

Unarmed deciduous shrubs or trees, often with buttress-roots. Leaves imparipinnate and opposite. Inflorescence of terminal panicles arising from buds at the end of the previous year’s branches, before or together with the new leafy branches. Flowers unisexual by abortion, pedicellate. Sepals 4, united at the base. Petals normally 4, but occasionally 5–6 in ♀ flowers, imbricate in bud. Male flowers: stamens 4–8; anthers basifixed, 2-lobed at base; ovary vestigial and glabrous. Female flowers: ovary globose, 4-locular, with 1 pendulous ovule in each locule; style short; stigma 4-lobed. Fruit thinly fleshy, globose, indehiscent, shortly stipitate, somewhat depressed, glandular-bullate, with resinous smell like the pepper tree. Seeds usually 2–4 per fruit, somewhat triquetrous-ovoid, with 2 flat sides and a third convex side; endosperm present.
