Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 15 m. high.. Branchlets densely covered in short grey hairs plus some long weak spreading hairs when young.. Leaves broadly lanceolate, often slightly curved, up to 16 cm. long and 4.5 cm. broad, usually smaller, ± 3 times as long as broad, apex acute and mucronate, suddenly contracted at the base, ± decurrent or with a very short petiole usually less than 0.5 cm. long; venation slightly prominent on both surfaces; upper surface with appressed grey hairs towards the base, glabrescent, undersurface with short appressed hairs on the lamina especially towards the base, plus longer and often spreading grey hairs near the base and on the short thick petiole.. Spikes or racemes up to 11 cm. long, mostly terminal, sometimes axillary; pedicels usually small if present, 0.1-0.2(-0.6) cm. long; peduncle densely pilose; bracts deltoid and pilose without; bracts at base of peduncle somewhat persistent, elongated-triangular, attenuated towards the apex, 0.35 cm. long, densely pilose outside.. Perianth pale greenish yellow or cream, up to 1.3 cm. long, tube becoming slightly bulbous towards the apex, densely covered in grey appressed hairs outside when young.. Anthers ± 2 mm. long.. Hypogynous scales triangular, narrowly attenuated to the apex, 1.5(-2) mm. long.. Fig. 1/6-8, p. 5.
