Characteristics

Small tree up to 10 m. high, with a rounded or pyramidal crown.. Young branchlets densely grey-pubescent, with some spreading hairs.. Leaves shining above, paler and greyish beneath, ± lanceolate, up to 12.5 cm. long and 3.2 cm. wide, 3-4 times as long as broad, tapering to an acute apex with a mucronate tip and tapering to a ± decurrent base; venation clearly visible on both surfaces, secondary veins subparallel and connected by intramarginal loops; surface glabrous above except for a dense covering of spreading hairs on the base of the midrib, lower surface with short appressed hairs becoming denser towards the base, also with longer spreading grey hairs towards the base especially on the midrib.. Spikes dense, up to 15 cm. long, terminal; peduncle somewhat ridged, densely pubescent/tomentose; bracts subtending flowers very small, cupuliform.. Perianth greenish cream to whitish, ± 9 mm. long, pubescent without with appressed hairs becoming denser towards the shortly bulbous apex.. Anthers 2 mm. long.. Hypogynous scales deltoid, less than 1 mm. long.
