Characteristics

Evergreen tree, up to 25 m high. Leaves alternate, entire and wavy, broadly elliptic to obovate, 70-170 x 25-60 mm, glabrous, thinly coriaceous; petioles 10 mm long, often red. Inflorescence a hanging spike, 170 mm long, 30 mm wide, white or pale pink, covered with grey velvety hairs, sweetly scented. Flowers bisexual, sessile, slightly irregular, each subtended by an ovate floral bract. Perianth 3 adaxial segments fused into a sheath; abaxial segment separated, limbs lanceolate-elliptic. Flowering time Feb.-Apr. Fruit a nutlet covered with long, yellow-white hairs.
