Characteristics

Leaves dark glossy-green, especially on upper surface, narrowly elliptic to broadly lanceolate, up to 10(13) cm long, 3(3.5) cm broad, but mostly smaller, apex acute, ± cuneate at base, margins undulate; midrib red (except on old leaves), midrib prominent beneath; leaves entirely glabrous; petioles 0.5–1 cm long, with short grey appressed hairs when young, glabrescent.

Inflorescence a dense raceme up to 11 cm long, terminal; peduncle shortly rusty-pubescent; pedicels patent, 2–4(6) mm long, less than 1 mm diameter, shortly rusty-pubescent; lower bracts on flowering raceme deltoid, upper bracts smaller and cupuliform, very shortly rusty pubescent.
Perianth reddish, white when open, 1.1–1.4 cm long, slender, puberulent.
Hypogynous scales triangular, attenuated to the apex, up to 2 mm long.
