Inflorescence an axillary racemose cyme, 13–22 cm. long few-flowered, or flowers solitary, produced before the leaves of the year; pedicels 5–7 (10) cm. long, walking-cane shaped.
Corolla 5–9 cm. long, broadly campanulate slightly 2-labiate, lobes more or less rounded and unequal, orange-reddish or crimson, yellow winish streaked at the throat.
Stamens 4, filaments flattened and adnate up to c. 8 mm.; anthers (6)8–11 mm. long, reaching the mouth of the corolla tube, thecae divergent, connective beaked.
Calyx 1.3–.3 cm. long, bell-shaped, irregularly 3–5 lobed halfway down, lobes ovate-deltoid, mucronulate, with scattered small glands.
Shrub, simple or many-stemmed from the base, or small tree 2–7.7(12) m. tall (reaching 30 m. outside Flora Zambesiaca area).
Bark brown or greywish, glabrous, rough, longitudinally deeply fissured with prominent elliptic, yellow-whitish lenticles.
Ovary 6–11 (18) mm. long cylindrical, glabrous; ovules 4–6-seriate in each locule; style 4–6 cm. long, flattened.
Capsule terete, 33–54 x 1.2 cm., spirally twisted and curved.
Seeds 7–12 x 18–36 mm. (including wings).
