Characteristics

Perennial herb, tufted, 0.15-0.50 m high. Leaf blades very short, setaceous, ± 0.3 mm wide. Culm lax, terete, with a lengthwise groove, ± 0.7 mm in diam. Inflorescence untidy, a much-reduced spike of spikelets, up to 15 x 10 mm. Subtending bracts 2, erect, setaceous, lower longer than inflorescence. Spikelets up to 8 x 2 mm. Glumes broadly lanceolate, ± 3 mm long, keel excurrent into awn up to 0.5 mm long. Flowering time Aug.-Nov., Jan., Apr., May, July. Nutlet obovate, including gynophore ± 1.8 mm long, 3-angled, dark reddish brown, surface minutely reticulate. Gynophore relatively large, lobed.
