Shrub 1–3 m; lvs elliptic to obovate, 1–4 cm, half as wide, obtuse or subacute, finely serrulate, abruptly narrowed to the short petiole; fls axillary, subtended by minute ovate bracts, both staminate and pistillate crowded and subsessile in dense fascicles; cal minute but present; fr broadly ellipsoid, 7–8 mm, more than half as thick. Usually in sandy or rocky soil; c. Ky. and Tenn. to Ala. and Fla. Aug.
