Characteristics

Monoecious, softly woody subshrub, up to 1.5 m high. Leaves alternate, discolorous, ovate and long acuminate at base, often whitish-tomentose beneath, lower surface with scattered curved hairs, apex broadly acute, margins with up to 7 pairs of broad irregular teeth; petioles up to 30 mm long; stipules broadly ovate. Inflorescences axillary clusters, with greenish involucres. Male flowers many at periphery of inflorescence, stalked; perianth club-shaped in bud, becoming irregularly 3-toothed; terminal lobe inflexed; stamen 1; rudimentary ovary 0. Female flowers sessile, 1-5 in centre of male involucre; perianth 0; ovary erect; stigma filiform, papillose-hispid, long-persistent. Flowering time Aug.-Oct. Fruit shortly stipitate achenes, ovoid, dark brown, up to 3 x 2 mm.
