Characteristics

Plants 100-250(-300) mm high. Corm conical, 15-25 mm diam., tunics light brown, of medium-coarse-textured fibres. Stem erect, smooth but minutely verrucose on angles below each flower, usually simple. Leaves 10 to 14, inclined to suberect, ± as long as stem, narrowly lanceolate, 100-200 x 4-10 mm, acute to subattenuate, drying at flowering time. Spike deflexed, 2-to 5-flowered; bracts ovate, dry and membranous or papery, translucent with brown veins and rust-coloured speckling on apices, 7-10(-13) mm long, acute, inner up to 2 mm longer. Flowers 50-60 mm long, white to creamy white, base of lowermost tepal and inner edges of lower lateral tepals flushed orange, all three lower tepals with dark brownish midline and with dark chevrons in sinuses, strongly lily-scented; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 35-45 mm long with basal tubular portion 15-20 mm long, widening ± abruptly into cylindric-flared upper portion; tepals with dorsal largest, suberect, obovate, 12-16 x 10-12 mm, upper laterals broadly elliptic, lower tepals recurved, elliptic, 10-15 x 17-9 mm. Filaments arcuate, 18-25 mm long, inserted at base of widened upper portion, included; anthers 7-9 mm long. Style dividing between base and middle of anthers. Capsules shortly oblong or oblong-ovoid, (7-)10-12 x 8-10 mm, warty or papillate. Seeds subglobose or with chalaza slightly swollen, 2.5-3.0 mm diam., smooth, glossy dark or reddish brown.

Flowers: in horizontal 2-5-flowered spikes; spikes 50-65 mm long; bracts 7-10(-12) mm long, dry-membranous, brown-veined, rust-tipped; inner bract ± 1 mm longer, acute; perianth with tube 36-44 mm long, curved towards apex of narrow basal part, inner segments 12-15 x 8-9 mm, ovate; outer segments up to 7 mm wide, white to cream-coloured with yellow markings on lower segments, purple lines in throat; Aug.-Oct.
