Characteristics

Plants 40-100 mm high, usually ± prostrate. Corm conic, 15-20 mm diam., tunics of pale, medium-textured fibres, accumulating with age and forming long collar. Stem flexed outward above uppermost leaf sheath and then prostrate or horizontal, densely puberulous, usually simple. Leaves (4)5 or 6(7), prostrate or rarely erect, slightly shorter than to half as long as stem, oblong to lanceolate, 20-50(60) x 6-15 mm, acute, leathery and ± glaucous, with prominent submarginal vein. Spike declinate, 4-to 10-flowered; bracts obovate, herbaceous and firm-textured, green with hyaline margins, 5-7 mm long, tricuspidate or upper bracts obtuse with prominent central cusp tipped rusty brown, inner slightly longer. Flowers (30-)33-37 mm long, white usually lightly flushed purple on reverse of tepals, base of lower tepals marked yellow-orange and usually with dark midline, strongly violet-scented; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 18-25 mm long, with tubular basal portion 6-10 mm long, widening ± abruptly into flared upper portion; tepals unequal, dorsal largest, erect, obovate, 12-15 x 7-8 mm, upper laterals oblong-lanceolate, lower tepals recurved, oblong-lanceolate, 11-13 x 4.0-5.5 mm. Filaments arcuate, 15-17 mm long, included; anthers 5.0-5.5 mm long. Style dividing below or opposite anther apices. Capsules oblong or subglobose, (5-)6-10 x 5-10 mm, minutely papillate when fresh. Seeds obliquely subglobose with slightly to moderately inflated chalaza and raphe, 2.0-3.0 mm diam., slightly wrinkled, glossy reddish or purplish brown.
