Characteristics

Dioecious. Stems to 20 (–30) mm diam.; internodes short. Leaves imbricate; auricles usually 3–7 cm long, ± glossy, with a rounded or narrowly deltoid apical lobe to 15 mm long, denticulate-spinulose on lobe margin, persistent with persistent leaf bases; blade linear-attenuate, (38–) 60–80 cm long, (14–) 20–35 mm wide, stiffly coriaceous; margins with prickles along whole length; midrib usually minutely prickly along whole length. Inflorescence with outer bracts leafy; innermost bracts deltoid-attenuate, to 20 cm long, yellow-orange to salmon pink. Male spikes with peduncles c. 3 cm long; fertile portion obloid, 6–9 cm long; filaments c. 1 mm long; anthers c. 0.8–1 mm long. Female spikes 3 or 4; fruiting heads cylindric, usually 14–21 (–30) cm long, 2.5–4 (–5) cm diam.; berry (4–) 6–10 mm diam., laterally compressed at apex, red; stigmas (4–) 8–12 (–20), in 2 rows.

A root climber. It is woody and bushy. The stems are 2 cm across. The leaves are simple and 38-52 cm long by 2-3 cm wide. They are organised in spirals around the stem. The edges of the leaves on the underside have teeth. The flowering cluster has bright orange to pink bracts underneath it. These are 20 cm long. There are 3-4 female heads which are 5-6.5 cm long by 0.8-0.9 cm wide. They are like a cylinder. The male spikes are 9-13 cm long by 0.6-0.8 cm wide. They are pale orange. The fruit are 14-30 cm long by 2.5-4.5 cm wide and occur singly or in twos. They have many small seeds. The flesh is edible.
