Characteristics

Dioecious or rarely monoecious. Stems to 10 mm diam.; internodes to 2 cm long. Leaves spreading; auricles to 3 cm long, ± denticulate near apex, ± translucent when young, caducous or persistent as a few longitudinal fibres; blade broadly linear to narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, mostly 8–13 cm long, 10–30 (–52) mm wide, acuminate to shortly caudate, thinly coriaceous; margins denticulate at leaf apex, sometimes with prickles in lower half; midrib unarmed or very sparsely prickly. Inflorescence with outer bracts leafy, reddish in lower half; inner bracts fleshy, reddish; innermost bracts deltoid, to c. 5 cm long, usually cream or white. Male spikes 3 or 4; peduncles c. 2 cm long; fertile portion obloid, to c. 3 (–10) cm long; filaments c. 1 mm long; anthers c. 0.5 mm long. Female spikes 1–3 (–4); fruiting heads ± shortly cylindric or ellipsoid, (1.6–) 3–6.5 cm long, orange to red; berry 3–7 mm diam., with apex shortly conical to pyramidal; stigmas 2 or 3 (–4).

A climbing shrub. It climbs up trees to a height of 15 m. The stem is about 1 cm across. The leaves and narrow and thin. They are rather loosely set on the stem. Leaves are 6-12 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide. The tip of the leaf is pointed. The leaf sheaths do not overlap. They are finely toothed along the edge and on the midrib underneath. The flower branches are oval and 3-4 together. The fruit are about 5.5 cm long by 4 cm wide. They can occur singly or in clusters at the end of the stems. They have many seeds. The fruit when ripe are red. There are small projections over the surface of the fruit.
