Species

Bryophytes > Porellales > Frullaniaceae > Frullania

Characteristics

Monoicous, large, green-yellowish brown. Stem irregularly branched, 240-285 µ in diameter. Leaves imbricate, lobe concave, exceeding the stem, broadly ellipsoid, margin entire and frequently undulate-crispate, with a rounded appendix on the dorsal side of the base. Lobule large, parallel to the stem, divided by an incision in the flattened galeate portion with a semicircular fold ending with a beak and a large auricular basal portion, consisting of a frequently crispate membranous prolongation of the dorsal wall with margin entire or usually irregularly lobed. Stylus small, to 70 µ long, consisting of a row of 2-4 cells. Cells of the lobe roundedly polygonal, trigones large, walls thin, often with intermediar nodular thickenings, marginal cells 14-18 x 20-22 µ, in the middle of the lobe 22-26(-32) µ, basal cells 22-30 x 36-44 µ, no ocelli, cuticle smooth, Amphigastria large, oppressed to the stem, 4-5 times wider than the stem, apex somewhat emarginate, margin undulate crispate, basally cordate with arched insertion, in the branches smaller and somewhat distant. Androecia ovate-globose, apical on very short branches, consisting of 2-5 pairs of imbricate bidenticulate bracts. Female organs apical on ± elongated branches, bracts 1-2, connate with the bracteole and each another, interior pair broad, elliptic and irregularly dentate, lobes lanceolate, with a long acute stylus, bracteole connate to 1/2 of its length with the bracts, bilobed to 1/4-1/3, lobes lanceolate. Perianth exceeding the bracts, longly cylindrical, with 8-10 smooth and undulate ridges of varying length and a 225-300 µ, long rostrum. Sporogone subglobose, 750 µ in diameter. Spores 28-30 x 40-52 µ.
