Species

Bryophytes > Porellales > Frullaniaceae > Frullania

Characteristics

Dioicous, of medium size, green-usually redbrown, on bark. Stem about 130 µ in diameter, to 4 cm long, irregularly branched. Leaves of the stem imbricate, overlapping the stem, ellipsoid, base cordate, insertion line arched. Marginal cells 10-12 µ in the middle of the lobe about 12 x 12 µ, basal cells 24 x 30-26 x 38 µ, walls often somewhat thickened and brown, sometimes undulate and with nodular intermediar thickenings, trigones colourless. Oil bodies small, 4-5 per cell, 3 x 12 µ, globose, composed of small drops, colourless. Lobule helmet-shaped, twice as long as broad, apex rounded, mouth bow-formed, wider than the mid-part of the lobule. Stylus small, to4 cells long, usually situated close to the ventral surface of the stem. Amphigastria triangular-obovate, broadest above the middle, bilobed to 1/4-1/3, lobes triangular-rounded, obtuse-subacute, sinus subacute, usually a shoulder in the lateral margin at the base of the lobe, insertion line arched, often not as wide as the stem. Androecia on short branches, globose, marginal cells of the bracts about 12 µ thin-walled, quadrate, the other cells about 12 x 30 µ, thin-walled, rectangular-polyhedrical, trigones lacking, cuticle often coloured redbrown over the central part of the cells and paler towards(the sidewalls, for which reason the androecium looks spotted. Female organ apical. Bracts in 2-3 pairs. The lobe elliptical with rounded apex, the inner two pairs have the ventral lobe pointed, margin entire or with a short too thin the median side, the third pair with obtuse apex of the lobe. Stylus small. Interior bracteole bilobed to 1/2, lobes long and acute, second bracteole bilobed to 1/3 the lateral margin of the lobe with a sharp tooth. Perianth ovate, with about 5 wings, one high ridge and frequently also 1-2 low ones on the ventral face, two low ridges or more on the dorsal face, the wings with rounded pluricellular tubercules, chiefly in the basal portion. Similar tubercules also scattered on the surface of the lower part of the perianth. Rostrum 180-200 µ long, about 80 µ wide, mouth funnel-shaped with margin slightly crenulate. Sporogone globose, opens to 1/2-1/3 by 4 valves. Elaters 18 µ wide, the mouth-ring 24 µ in diameter, spiral 4 µ broad. Spores 46-50 µ in diameter, brown, centre green and numerous dark spots on the surface.
