Fuchsia regia (vand. ex Vell.) Munz

A shrub. It loses many leaves during the year. It grows 1.5-3 m tall. The branches hang down. The leaves are simple and opposite. They are papery and have a short leaf stalk. The leaves are 4-6 cm long. The flowers occur singly in the axils of leaves and hang down. They are tube shaped and purple-red. The fruit are oval berries. They have a sweet taste. The fruit can contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the throat.

It is a tropical plant. It grows in high altitude regions in Brazil. It grows on wet slopes between 700-2,000 m above sea level. Hobart Botanical Gardens.

The fruit are eaten.

Plants can be grown by seed or cuttings.
