Perennial herb, up to 500 mm high. Rhizome 3-9 mm in diameter. Flowers: usually 3 perianth scales, with awn; glumes reddish green, with awns 0.8-1.7 mm long, pubescent except distally. Fruit a nutlet 1.3-1.6 x 0.7-0.9 mm, epidermal cells of pericarp large (visible with 10 x lens) with deeply and closely rippled anticlinal walls.
