Characteristics

A straggling shrub or small tree. It grows 8-18 m high. It has branches low down. The stems are slightly hairy when young. The leaves are 8-18 cm long by 3-8 cm wide. They are narrowly oval and taper to the tip. They are thinly leathery. The flowers are greenish white. They are in large loose groups 7-30 cm long. They have a sweet scent. The fruit is juicy and purple or blue coloured. They are 9 mm long by 6 mm wide.

Leaves 8–18 x 3–7.5 cm., elliptic, oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate-elliptic, abruptly and acutely acuminate at the apex, ± cuneate at the base, thinly coriaceous, ± discolorous, ± glabrous or midrib and nerves sparsely pilose-pubescent beneath; petiole up to 1.5 cm. long; stipules membranous, connate, the sheath c. 1 cm. long, the apices free and ending in long aristate points, later breaking up.

Style and stigmatic lobes exserted c. 2 mm. in long-styled flowers; anthers exserted c. 3 mm. in short-styled flowers.
Corolla white or greenish, ± tomentose outside; tube funnel-shaped, 3–4 mm. long; lobes about 2x1 mm., triangular.
Fruits juicy, violet, purple or blue, c. 9 x 6 mm., ellipsoid, or if with two pyrenes then broader c. 7 x 8 mm.
Pyrene wall pale, thin; seed dark, 4 x 3 mm., broadly ovoid, with obscure irregular sulcation.
Calyx up to 1.7 mm. long, the teeth triangular, c. 1 mm. long.
