Stamens attached at the top of the corolla tube, exserted and spreading when mature; filaments short; anthers dorsifixed near the base, narrowly oblong, with connective distinctly apiculate.
Seeds (2)4 per fruit, c. one quarter (one third)-spherical, finely reticulate; endosperm ruminate; placenta forming a small aril-like structure at apex of the pair of seeds.
Style short, subulate, pubescent; pollen presenter deeply bifid, but two halves often held together; 5 membranous ciliate wings present on each lobe.
Ovary 2-locular; placentas small, attached to septum near the top of the loculus, bearing 2 pendulous ovules or rarely 1 ovule on a larger placenta.
Flowers sweet-scented, hermaphrodite, 5-merous, pedicellate in pedunculate axillary cymes; bracts and bracteoles present.
Leaves opposite, petiolate; domatia present or absent; stipule lobes triangular, shortly connate.
Calyx glabrous or pubescent; tube ovoid; limb short, wider than tube, lobed.
Corolla subrotate, tube extremely short; lobes ovate, contorted to the left.
Fruit baccate, globose, 2-celled; calyx limb persistent.
Shrub or small tree; branches glabrous or pubescent.
