Characteristics

Climbing or procumbent perennial herb 0.15–1 m. long, with coarsely prickly stems and sometimes coarse hairs at the nodes.. Leaves and stipules in whorls of 6; blades narrowly elliptic to elliptic-oblanceolate, 0.5–3.7 cm. long, 0.2–0.8(–1.1) cm. wide, sharply acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, margins and midnerve above and beneath with coarse prickles, glabrous on upper surface with rather scattered bristly hairs.. Inflorescences short, 1–3-flowered; peduncles 0.8–2.6 cm. long; true pedicels short, 0–1 mm. long, but sometimes appearing up to 8 mm. long.. Calyx-tube greenish, purplish or brownish, 0.4–0.8 mm. in diameter, hairy.. Corolla yellowish, 3–5 mm. wide; lobes 1.2–2.1 mm. long, 0.9–1.2 mm. wide, subacute to apiculate; joined part of the tube 0.3–0.5 mm. long.. Fruit, covered with brownish hooked hairs ± 1.2 mm. long; cocci 3 mm. in diameter.

Leaves in whorls of 6,1-nerved, (20)25–35(40) x (5)7–12(15) mm., (broadly) elliptic to obovate, abruptly acuminate at apex, narrowed to base; upper surface glabrous or with a few short, straight hairs, margins and midrib (beneath) with coarse, ± hyaline recurved prickles.
Corolla c. 3–4 mm. in diam., rotate, somewhat hairy outside, greenish-white to greenish-yellow; lobes about as long as wide, ± acute; stamens short; ovary c. 0.4–0.8 mm. long.
Stems climbing or creeping, to 2.3 m. long, few-branched, with ± large, hyaline recurved prickles on the 4 distinct, whitish angles, and often densely hairy at nodes.
Inflorescence very reduced, 3–1-flowered, peduncles 10–20 mm. long after anthesis, pedicels 0.5–1 mm. long subtended by 4–1 ± large to minute bracts.
Fruit densely covered with brownish, hooked hairs c. 1 mm. long; mericarps ± reniform, each 1–1.5 mm. in diam.
