Shrub to small tree to 6 m high, dioecious, often mult-stemmed; exudate yellow. Twigs square. Leaves glabrous; petiole 5–8 mm long, channelled, not ligulate; lamina discolorous, almost membranous, elliptic, 3–14.5 cm long, 2.5–5.7 cm wide, base cuneate, margin narrowly recurved, apex acuminate or caudate, rarely acute or obtuse; venation brochidodromous, primary vein flush on upperside and raised on underside; secondary veins 12–16 pairs, slightly raised on both surfaces, becoming puckered in dry specimens, angle of divergence from primary vein c. 45o, intramarginal vein 0.6–1.2 mm from margin. Male inflorescences axillary or ramiflorous, a fascicle seated on a pulvinus, 1–3-flowered. Male flowers 5–6.5 mm diam.; sepals 4, 2-whorled, free, ovate, c. 1.5 mm long; petals 4 (5), oblong-elliptic, 2.5–3 mm long; androecium a fleshy receptacle not adnate to petals; anthers 5–9, sessile or almost so; pistillode absent. Female inflorescences axillary or ramiflorous, a solitary flower, sessile. Female flowers c. 5 mm diam.; sepals 4, 2-whorled, free, ovate, 2–3 mm long; petals 4, free, spreading widely, oblong-elliptic, c. 3 mm long; staminodal phalanges 4, adnate to petals; ovary 6–13-locular. Fruit a fleshy berry, usually ovoid, 20–27 mm long, 29–45 mm wide, pink-red to dark red, 6–13 septum lines and segments.
