Characteristics

Shrubby tree 2.7–5 m. high, with the habit of Uapaca kirkiana, glabrous; branches thick, with a rough greyish and corky bark, yellowish and transversely plicate on the young shoots; latex yellow, sticky .. Leaves in whorls of 3, subsessile or shortly petiolate; blades obovate to elliptic, 6–27.5 cm. long, 3.5–11 cm. wide, rounded to obtuse and often mucronulate at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base, bright green and concolorous, the margins undulate and incrassate; venation prominent and reticulate on both surfaces; secretory canals not visible; petiole 2–4 mm. long, channelled above, transversely wrinkled; ligule prominent.. Flowers unisexual, clustered on cushions in axils or above leaf-scars on the mostly leafless parts of branchlets; pedicels 5–22 mm. long.. Male flowers 15–20 mm. in diameter; sepals 5, unequal, the 2 outer suborbicular, cucullate, 3 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, the 3 inner ovate to suborbicular, 7–10 mm. long, 6–8 mm. wide; petals 5, white or pale cream-yellow with translucent and reddish longitudinal glandular lines, similar to the inner sepals; stamens numerous, free, inserted in a fleshy cushion; filaments 2 mm. long; anthers ovoid; ovary vestige absent.. Female flowers with fewer free staminodes inserted in a fleshy cushion; ovary globose or broadly ovoid, 2–3-locular; stigma sessile, fleshy, 2–3-lobed, Berry ovoid-globose, smooth, 1–3-seeded.
