Characteristics

Shrub to small tree to 6 m high, dioecious, sparsely branched with branches mostly pendulous; exudate opaque white, colourless or slightly milky. Twigs slightly 4-sided on new growth, becoming terete on older growth. Leaves glabrous; petiole 10–25 mm long, attached on underside of lamina; lamina discolorous, coriaceous, oblong or ovate-oblong, 11–29.5 cm long, 4.5–10 cm wide, base cordate or rounded, margin entire and strongly recurved, apex acute and often almost aristulate; venation paxillate, primary vein distinctly raised on both sides, green on upperside and yellow on underside; secondary veins c. 100, raised on both surfaces, angle of divergence from primary vein 70–90o, intramarginal vein on the margin. Male inflorescences terminal, a panicle, 9–39-flowered. Male flowers 13–27.5 mm diam.; sepals 4, 2-whorled, orbicular, outer pair joined, 4–6 mm long, inner pair free, 4–8 mm long; petals 4, orbicular or oblong-orbicular, 8.5–15 mm long; androecium of 4 fused phalanges creating a solitary receptacle, adnate to petals and flower base; anthers numerous, densely clustered, subsessile; fungiform pistillode present in some flowers. Female inflorescences terminal, a solitary flower (rarely pairs). Female flowers 16–25 mm diam.; sepals 4, free, D-shaped, outer pair narrowly joined, c. 6.3 mm long, inner pair free, c. 8.3 mm long; petals 4, oblong-orbicular, c. 13.5 mm long; staminodal phalanges 4, adnate to petals; ovary 6–8-locular. Fruit a semi-dry berry, top-shaped or broadly ovoid, mostly beaked (beak up to 20 mm long), 60–72 mm long, 50–58 mm wide, green, 6–8 shallow septum-lobes or septum-lines, stigma remnants 6–8-rayed.
