Characteristics

Tree to 30 m high, dioecious; exudate colourless, white or slightly milky, meager. Twigs square, deeply grooved between last 2 pairs of leaves, becoming terete. Leaves glabrous; petiole 5–10 mm long, channelled, ligulate; lamina discolorous, coriaceous, elliptic or rarely obovate, 3.5–11 cm long, 1.5–3.5 cm wide, base attenuate, cuneate or decurrent, margin flat or recurved, apex bluntly acute; venation brochidodromous, primary vein distinctly raised on upperside, slightly raised near base on underside and flush or slightly depressed towards apex; secondary veins obscure, 12–18 pairs, flush on both surfaces, angle of divergence from primary vein c. 60o, forming intramarginal loops c. 0.5 mm from margin. Male inflorescences axillary or rarely terminal, an umbel or rarely a cyme, 2–11-flowered. Male flowers 7.5–8.5 mm diam.; sepals 4, outer pair joined, inner pair free, D-shaped, 2–4 mm long; petals 4, orbicular, 3–4.5 mm long; androecium 4-phalangiate; phalanges antepetalous. Female inflorescences axillary, an umbel, 3–5-flowered. Female flowers 6–8 mm diam.; sepals 4, D-shaped or deltoid, outer pair joined, c. 2 mm long, inner pair free, 2–4 mm long; petals 4, orbicular, 2.2–4.2 mm long; gynoecium fungiform; ovary 2-locular. Fruit a fleshy berry, ellipsoid, 25–37 mm long, 10–18 mm wide, red to dark red or blackish, stigma at apex 4–6 mm diam.
