Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, decumbent to erect, 25-180(-230) mm tall and 75-180(-230) mm in diameter, proliferating from the base to form small groups. Roots succulent, up to 5 mm in diameter. Leaves distichous, 60-120(-170) mm long and 30-45 mm broad at the base, lorate, erectly spreading rarely somewhat recurved, the apices becoming incurved during the dry season; upper surface convex to flat, becoming channelled during the dry season; lower surface convex or flat; both surfaces with dense white spots arranged in irregular transverse bands; epidermis asperulous; margin irregularly undulating, tuberculate-crenulate; apex obtuse, rarely truncate, mucronate. Juvenile leaves often patent or recurved, asperulous; with a truncate apex. Inflorescence racemose, simple, or with a pair of side branches, 200-900 mm tall, bearing 150 to 180 flowers on upper half; floral bracts 7 mm long, 2 mm broad at the base: pedicels 5-7 mm long. Perianth 12-20 mm long, stipitate for 2-3 mm, gasteriform basally for more than half its length, thence constricted to a tube of 3-4 mm in diameter; gasteriform portion globose-elliptic or narrow-elliptic, 6 mm in diameter, pink to reddish pink; tube white, with green striations; apices erectly spreading obtuse; margin of inner segments free, canaliculate for the length of the gasteriform portion. Anthers oblong 2 mm long, not protruding. Style 7-10 mm long; stigma minute, included, exceeding the anthers after anthesis. Capsule oblong 15-23 mm long, 7 mm broad. Seeds 3-4 mm long, 2-3 mm wide. Flowering rime July to February, but mainly in September.
