Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Asphodelaceae > Gasteria

Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, decumbent to erect, 15-40 mm tall, 20-50(-80) mm in diameter, proliferating from the base to form dense clusters up to 200 mm in diameter. Roots up to 2 mm in diameter. Leaves distichous, 15-25(-50) mm long and 15-20(-25) mm broad at the base, firm, lorate to widely ovate; inner leaves erectly spreading outer leaves patent or recurved biconvex in cross section to almost terete, becoming dorsiventrally flattened during the dry season; upper surface often retuse in upper third, both surfaces glaucous, immaculate; epidermis tuberculate-asperulous, usually covered with dust; the tubercles translucent and smooth on top, domed often confluent and forming a rugulose pattern; outer cell walls between tubercles irregularly domed to subconical, with centric translucent papillae resulting in the asperulous texture; margin entire, minutely crenulate-tuberculate in upper quarter; apex truncate or obtuse, mucronate. Juvenile leaves distichous, lorate, ascending at first, becoming patent or recurved; epidermis asperulous, only slightly and obscurely tuberculate. Inflorescence an erectly spreading raceme, 120-200 mm long, bearing 8 to 20 flowers; scape 3 mm in diameter at base; bracts 4-5 mm long, 2-2.5 mm broad at the base; floral bracts the same; pedicel 5-7 mm long. Perianth (20-)22-25(-27) mm long, trichromatic, stipitate for 5 mm, gasteriform basally for slightly more than half its length: the gasteriform portion reddish pink variable, 6-9(-10) mm in diameter (globose-elliptic to globose), thence constricted into a tube 4 mm wide; apices erect to erectly spreading obtuse, white with centric green striations; inner segments canaliculate for the length of the gasteriform portion. Stamens 18-20 mm long three lengthening in advance; anthers 2 mm long oblong included Ovary 4-5 mm long and 2 mm in diameter; style 10-11 mm long, exceeding the anthers after anthesis; stigma minute, curved upwards, becoming capitate during anthesis, included. Capsule 13-15 mm long, 6 mm in diameter. Seeds 2-3 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide. Flowering time September.
